California’s high cost of housing highlighted in 2006 housing affordability report

Washington, DC – According to a report released today, the Housing Wage for California is $22.86. The Housing Wage is the hourly wage a family must earn – working 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year – to be able to afford rent and utilities in the private housing market. This represents an increase of 37.4% since 2000.

A new report, "Affordable by Choice: Trends in California Inclusionary Housing Programs," was released yesterday by the Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California in cooperation with the California Coalition for Rural Housing, the San Diego Housing Federation, and the Sacramento Housing Alliance. It is the state’s most detailed study to date on affordable homes built through inclusionary housing programs.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed its bill to fund housing programs yesterday and President Bush has pledged to veto this bill because he believes it provides too much money for low-income housing. If we don't organize support for housing low-income families, we are at risk of losing the minimal housing resources we have today!
