Internship Application

Are you community-minded?  Passionate about making a positive impact in peoples’ lives?  Would you like to learn and contribute to the work of nonprofit organizations building and providing dignified affordable housing in underserved communities?  If so, this opportunity may be the right fit for you. 

  

The California Coalition for Rural Housing (CCRH) is proud to announce its 27th Annual Rural West Internship Program for Diversity in Nonprofit Housing and Community Development. The CCRH Internship Program is a one-year paid Internship designed to recruit, train, and retain housing development professionals who enhance inclusion and racial equity within the Affordable Housing Development field.   Selected interns are placed with CCRH members and partner organizations in CA, OR, HI, and WA state through the internship program. CCRH members and partner nonprofit organizations have responded to the need for affordable housing by building, maintaining, and rehabilitating affordable housing complexes in the rural West since the 1960s.

For over 25 years, this Internship Program has bridged Black, Indigenous People of Color college students from historically underrepresented rural, farmworker, immigrant, low-income and marginalized communities to rewarding careers in the affordable housing and community development field.

Interns learn the following leadership and technical skills that can help in their personal lives and prepare them to jumpstart a career in affordable housing:

  • Assist with the financial applications and loan closings for housing developments

  • Coordinate meetings, activities, and operations related projects with property management, development, and resident services

  • Oversee project transition from construction completion to lease-up and operations

  • Review financial budget for project milestones and projections

Interns further develop their leadership skills and on-the-ground experience with their host agency through the program’s mandatory trainings and supplemental activities. The following training activity sessions take place in person and/or Zoom:

  • Summer Training Institute 

  • Rural Housing Summit 

  • Mid-Winter Retreat  

  • Final Session/Project Presentations

Historically underrepresented BIPOC college students from rural, farmworker, immigrant, low-income or marginalized backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply

Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated and interested in a career that entails using technical, qualitative, and communication skills in working for social change

  • Committed to community development, affordable housing, or impacting low-income and diverse communities

  • Must be very responsible, detailed oriented, and able to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities

  • Preference is given to those entering their last year of school—or—recent college graduates, who have an interest in learning about housing development, and want to pursue a career in the nonprofit housing field

  • Students who can demonstrate a commitment to improving the quality of life of low-income and underserved communities.

  • A positive attitude, a strong commitment to affordable housing, and social justice are a must

  • Interns, who live or will be living within driving distance of the internship locations available.  CCRH does not provide relocation or housing assistance.  

  • The program encourages applicants from all majors and students open to working with numbers, data, budgets, and Excel

  • Good college-level reading and writing skills and attention to detail

The Internship Program begins in June 2024 and ends on May 31, 2025.

 

Interns must commit to the following work schedule:

  • Full time (40 hours a week): June – August 2024

  • Part time work (16 - 20 hours a week): During the academic year from September 2024 – May 2025

  • Able to participate in four-day in-person training at UC Davis and periodic online training: Between July -  August 2024

  • Interns will engage in a hybrid model of remote and in-person day-to-day work at the host site. CCRH pays for all intern travel, lodging and meals associated with mandatory intern training activities and per CCRH guidelines.

Pay Rate:

  • The pay rate is $18 per hour
