Host Agency: Mutual Housing California

University: University of California, Davis

Jessica Ison (she/hers) is a Third-Year Community and Regional Development student at the University of California, Davis. Born in San Francisco, CA raised in Fairfield, CA but also having roots in Pearl City, Hawaii and the province of Ilocos Sur in the Philippines, Jessica tries her best to remember the people, places, and ancestral prayers that got her to where she is today. As a first-generation college student and Pilipina American, she understands first-hand the importance of community. This led to her heavy involvement in the Pilipinx American community at UC Davis, as well as the Office of Sustainability.

Growing up, her parents always had their doors open for family members to pass through—despite already having five children of their own. By providing a stable home, Jessica witnessed how this transformed her family members and allowed them to better their education, mental wellbeing, and physical health, among other things. Jessica hopes that with this internship she can help folks in a similar way and try her best to make sure no one has to struggle for basic needs. While unsure on a specific career in the future, she knows she wants to serve the most vulnerable people and communities. Jessica will be working with the Housing Development team at Mutual Housing Sacramento.
