From Salem, Oregon Melissa is a first-generation college student and the eldest of 4 children. Outside of school, she advocates for higher education as a senior mentor at a local high school in Springfield, Oregon.
Melissa’s interest for affordable housing comes from her exposure to public housing and low-income services as an intern for Lane County’s housing agency. Her passion for ensuring that communities have their needs met through housing options and resources encouraged her to apply for the CCRH Internship Program. With the support of the program, she has joined NeighborWorks Umpqua in Roseburg, Oregon as the Development Finance and Planning Intern. Melissa hopes to use the knowledge and skills she gains during her time as an intern to work in the community development field after graduation. As a person of color, she plans to advocate for the representation of low-income communities, racial equity, and diversity both in her work and in her community.
