Valeriya “Lera” Tyugay
University: Whitworth University

Valeriya Tyugay is an international student from Kazakhstan with a deep passion for helping others. Valeriya is currently pursuing a degree in business administration, focusing on finance and management, at Whitworth University in Spokane, WA. Being far from home and family, Valeriya understands the importance of feeling safe, supported, and connected in a new environment.


As the former Lead Cultural Diversity Advocate at Whitworth, Valeriya has made it her mission to help international students find a sense of belonging, just as she did. She knows firsthand how crucial it is to have a place where you feel at home, no matter how far you are from where you grew up.


This understanding has fueled Valeriya’s dedication to affordable housing. She believes that everyone deserves a safe and supportive place to call home, especially those who might feel displaced or far from their roots. Through the CCRH Internship Program, Valeriya is gaining valuable experience in housing development at Community Frameworks, where she’s learning how to create welcoming, affordable communities that offer both security and a sense of belonging.


Fluent in multiple languages, Valeriya is always ready to connect with others, listen to their stories, and work towards creating solutions that make a real difference. She’s excited to continue using her skills and experiences to help others feel at home, no matter where they are.
