Host Agency: People's Self-Help Housing
University: California Polytechnic State University
Sharon is a 4th year City & Regional Planning undergrad at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo with minors in Ethnic Studies, Political Science, and Sustainable Environments. Originally from West Covina, CA in the Los Angeles area, she was exposed to a variety of people, places, cultures, and living conditions which led her to understand the importance of resources, community, and showing up for one another. At Cal Poly, she’s been an Orientation Leader, Resident Advisor, and a member of several cultural clubs on campus, allowing her to build a community for herself and encourage others to do the same. One project she was involved in revolved around proposing alternative housing options and expanding resources for housing and basic needs for students at her university. This experience allowed her to see the importance of involvement and advocacy and she hopes to bring the same fervor to her career.
Through the CCRH Internship Program, Sharon hopes to make a difference in her college town and surrounding cities, given the challenges of housing affordability in the area. With only a year left in school, she hopes she can make small strides in creating a more equitable and inclusive San Luis Obispo. She also hopes to gain new skills, knowledge, connections, and memories that’ll last a lifetime. She hopes to one day obtain a Master’s degree in community development, urban design, or a related field and work at the intersection of social justice issues, design, and development.
